We often underestimate just how crucial our brain is to our everyday lives.

Sure, it helps us move, think, and talk… but it also does so much more like communicating with our immune system!

Our brains are made up of highly-sensitive gray matter and can be imbalanced for any number of reasons (which is why being proactive with brain health should always be your number one priority!).

These brain imbalances can affect how our immune system functions. While your “left brain” promotes an immune response for times of infection and injury, the “right side” should inhibit this rise in immune response when it is not necessary. Thus, if the “right side” of your brain isn’t as strong, the immune system activity is not proportionate to needs and autoimmunity becomes likely.

Something we’re all familiar with, stress, can wreak havoc on our hippocampus. The hippocampus stores your memories but also has a huge impact on your blood sugar management and can create a vicious cycle of stress and self-destruction when our blood sugar and cortisol levels are not synced up. It is also responsible for some devastating degenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s), hence the increased prevalence of autoimmunity and these degenerative diseases and dementias.

Other aspects of a dysfunctional communication between the brain and immune system include a Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, autonomic imbalances, and even the integrity of your gut and brain barrier systems.

It’s highly important to seek the help of a Functional Neurologist if you are living with autoimmunity!

Many of us have been tasked to write letters to loved ones or pen pals, but have you ever written one for your future self? Penning a letter (not typing a letter) is an easy way to jog your brain at any time of the day.

Not only will you be reminding yourself how to write via pen and paper, but you’ll be using your imagination to wonder what life will be like in 5, 10, or 20 years from now. What will be different? What do you need to do to make your dreams come true? How does it make you feel to be excited about the future again?

We send and receive emails and texts all day – just imagine the joy on your face later when you find the dusty envelope with your letter in it! (Also think how happy a loved one or friend would be to receive a penned letter from you from the postman!)
